Volvo Group SA appoints new Managing Director

Posted on: March 11, 2026

There’s something quietly reassuring for truck fleet operators when their OEM of choice appoints a new chief executive with ‘diesel in their veins’, someone who has ‘risen through the ranks’, from the workshop floor to the head of the boardroom table. One such trucking professional is Stuart Potter, Volvo Group Southern Africa’s new Managing Director of as of 1 March 2026.

Hailing from the United Kingdom, Potter takes over from Waldemar Christensen, who has led the organisation since 2022 and now moves on to become CEO of Volvo Group’s Designwerk Technologies AG in Switzerland.

From technician to top office
With 33 years in the commercial vehicle and transport sector and more than a decade within Volvo Trucks, Potter’s journey began as a heavy commercial vehicle technician, equipping him with an understanding of uptime not only as a KPI on a spreadsheet but also (and arguably more importantly) as a truck stranded at the roadside at 02H00.

Over the years, he has accumulated leadership experience across aftermarket, retail and operational divisions – areas that directly influence customer profitability. His perspective is shaped by the realities of workshop throughput, parts availability and dealer performance.

“The heartbeat of the commercial vehicle industry is its people,” says Potter. “Fleet owners operate in a very real world with significant challenges. That is why keeping people at the centre of what we do, building trust and long-term partnerships, is essential to ensuring we support our customers every step of the way.”

Dealer network as strategic backbone
Potter is unequivocal about the role of the dealer network in South Africa’s road freight ecosystem. For a premium brand competing in a cost-sensitive and operationally demanding environment, support infrastructure often determines purchasing decisions as much as product specification.

Volvo Group Southern Africa operates from its head office in Jet Park, Gauteng, and runs a Volvo Trucks assembly plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The local portfolio spans Volvo Trucks, Volvo Penta, Volvo Bus and Volvo Financial Services. Around 750 employees support operations nationally, backed by a dealer footprint of 20 sites – 12 wholly owned and eight privately owned.

“Fleet owners want long-term partnerships centred around total solutions that enable them to operate with maximum profitability and reliability,” Potter adds. “When customers select a vehicle supplier, factors beyond product quality, such as finance, service agreements, fleet management, and parts and service support, are critical to their success. Quality and reliability matter more than ever in a rapidly changing world,” Potter concludes.

Editor’s comment: The Southern African road freight market is navigating choppy waters right now, what with supply chain and regulatory shifts, diesel price volatility, decarbonisation pressures and persistent infrastructure constraints. As such, leadership continuity and operational depth are important competitive differentiators. Appointing a managing director who understands the workshop floor, dealer realities and fleet economics from first-hand experience reinforces Volvo’s premium positioning. It demonstrates to operators that the brand’s local strategy will remain rooted in uptime, partnership and total cost of ownership.

Congratulations on your appointment Mr Potter, and welcome to South Africa! Here’s to your success at Volvo Group SA!
