Tata Motors and Iveco join forces to create global commercial vehicle powerhouse

Posted on: November 5, 2026

The global commercial vehicle industry has a new heavyweight, with Indian automotive giant Tata Motors and Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer Iveco Group formally coming together to create a global enterprise with combined revenues of approximately €21-billion (R390-billion) and operations spanning more than 130 countries.

Announced at a global press conference in Turin, Italy, on 3 November following a year of regulatory due diligence, the combination brings together two established names in commercial mobility, creating a business ranked fourth in the world by truck sales volumes in the over-six-ton segment.

With complementary product portfolios, manufacturing capabilities and geographic strengths, the new enterprise aims to strengthen its position across developed and high-growth markets in Europe, India, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

A formidable global footprint
The scale of the combined operation is considerable. Tata Motors and Iveco Group bring together annual sales volumes of approximately 590 000 vehicles, more than 73 000 employees across six continents, 27 manufacturing sites and 25 research and development centres.

Their combined sales and service network comprises more than 9 300 centres worldwide, providing a substantial platform for customer support, aftermarket services and future growth.

The portfolios also offer considerable complementarity. Tata Motors has a broad commercial vehicle range extending from sub-one-ton vehicles to 55-tonne trucks, alongside passenger transport solutions accommodating between 10 and 51 people. Its strongest markets include India and other high-growth regions in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

Iveco Group brings established light, medium and heavy commercial vehicle capabilities, together with city and intercity buses and the specialist powertrain expertise of FPT Industrial (Iveco Group’s powertrain division). Its strong positions in Europe and Latin America further broaden the combined enterprise’s international reach.

Technology and cleaner mobility in focus
Beyond scale, the combination creates opportunities to accelerate development across conventional and alternative powertrain technologies.

The combined capabilities span internal combustion engines, natural gas, battery-electric, hydrogen and other emerging low- and zero-emission solutions. This provides a broader technology base from which to address different customer requirements, operating environments and decarbonisation pathways.

Software, connected technologies, advanced engineering and manufacturing are also identified as key areas for collaboration, with expertise and capabilities expected to flow in both directions between the organisations.

Chairman of Tata Sons, Tata Motors and Iveco Group, N Chandrasekaran, said: “Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Tata Motors and Iveco Group. Two strong and successful organisations, united by shared values, a common commitment to sustainable mobility and an ambition to shape the future of commercial transportation, have come together to create a truly global commercial mobility enterprise.

“We will invest for the long term, enable ideas and capabilities to flow in both directions and harness our combined scale, reach and talent to shape a future of mobility that is safer, smarter, more connected and more sustainable. I take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Italian Government, the regulatory authorities across jurisdictions, our employees, shareholders and all the stakeholders whose trust, cooperation and support have helped us reach this important milestone.

“I also warmly welcome our colleagues from Iveco Group into the Tata family and look forward to all that we can achieve together.”

Distinct identities, shared ambition
Importantly for existing customers and business partners, the combination is not intended to erase the identities or industrial foundations of either organisation.

Iveco Group will remain headquartered in Turin, Italy, with its brands, teams and industrial footprint retaining their distinct identities. Tata Motors will support Iveco Group’s existing strategy and investment plans while the two businesses explore opportunities to leverage their complementary strengths.

Girish Wagh, MD and CEO of Tata Motors, said: “We are pleased to turn our strategic vision into an operational reality alongside our colleagues at Iveco Group. Together we have a compelling opportunity to create greater value for our customers and stakeholders. Our complementary portfolios, capabilities and geographic strengths provide a strong foundation for growth, while ensuring continuity from day one for customers, dealers and partners.

“Our ambition is to build a stronger enterprise by combining our strengths in engineering, new age technologies, sourcing, distribution and customer networks. We will accelerate innovation, broaden our reach and bring advanced solutions to customers faster and more competitively.”

Iveco Group CEO Olof Persson stated: “This is a defining moment for Iveco Group and one we approach with confidence and great energy. We begin this new chapter proudly with the brands, people, capabilities and industrial heritage that have shaped our company, alongside Tata Motors, a partner of great strength, with a deep understanding of the commercial vehicle business and a shared long-term perspective and commitment to sustainable transport.

“I want to thank our employees, customers, dealers, suppliers and partners for their trust and support. We now have the opportunity to build on everything Iveco Group has achieved, unlock new possibilities with Tata Motors and create an even stronger future.”

Continuity for customers and partners
The companies have emphasised that the transition will be seamless for customers, dealers, suppliers and business partners.

Existing customer contracts, dealer and supplier relationships, warranties, aftermarket commitments and captive financing solutions will continue unchanged, supported by the same dedicated teams and networks.

For employees, the combination also creates opportunities for collaboration, learning and professional growth, with engineering expertise, market knowledge and best practices expected to flow between the two organisations.

A new chapter for commercial mobility
For the global trucking industry, the significance of this development extends well beyond the creation of a larger manufacturer.

The combination brings together two substantial commercial vehicle businesses with complementary geographic strengths, broader product offerings and the engineering resources to compete across an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving mobility landscape.

For customers, the stated ambition is greater choice, wider market access and faster access to new technologies. For suppliers, dealers and distribution partners, the expanded enterprise opens opportunities to participate in a much larger international business.

With a combined presence across more than 130 countries, Tata Motors and Iveco Group are positioning themselves for a future in which global scale, technological adaptability and local customer understanding will be increasingly important to commercial vehicle manufacturers.

Editor’s comment: On paper, this is a formidable marriage of commercial vehicle manufacturing strengths, technological capabilities and global market reach. But combining two industrial giants is about considerably more than putting complementary product portfolios and balance sheets under one roof.

Tata Motors and Iveco Group come from very different corporate and cultural environments, shaped by distinct business traditions, management philosophies and social contexts in India and Italy. Making those differences work in their favour, rather than allowing them to become obstacles, will be a significant part of the journey ahead.

If the two organisations can preserve what makes each distinctive while building a genuinely shared vision, this could become considerably more than a bigger global truck manufacturer. The real test, as always, will be in the execution.
