Masana turns 20: care and inspiration beyond petroleum

Posted on: May 28, 2025

As the truck transport and petroleum industries in South Africa seek to attract and develop young talent, Masana Petroleum Solutions’ (Masana) journey over the past two decades stands as a compelling beacon of hope and achievement. Our nation’s youth can take heart in the success story of Masana, a model of what’s possible when black empowerment, innovation and resilience intersect.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Masana is a pioneering, majority black-owned and managed company that has made a significant and lasting impact in the South African petroleum products and energy solutions sector.

Customer-centric fuelling solutions

Managing Director, Morena Sithole says: “From inspired and aspirational beginnings, Masana has experienced exceptional growth over the past twenty years, built on a competitive value proposition that anticipates and responds to our customers’ evolving needs in the various commercial and industrial sectors within the South African economy. None of this would have been possible without the commitment of our valued partners, including our valued customers, suppliers and employees. Moving forward, this is a legacy to build on, further deepening our customer-centric solutions offering and playing our role in fuelling the economy.”

Chairman Paul Nkuna echoes this sentiment, stating: “Masana’s agile and inclusive approach to business has been the cornerstone of its success over the years and has continued to position itself in the most competitive way possible in the market. We are proud of the commitment of everyone at Masana to growing the business and the critical role played by our various partners across our value chain, including our shareholders, management team and employees.”

Masana is 54% black-owned, with 23% of that in the hands of black women. Multinational energy company bp, with over a century of operational success in South Africa, holds 50.5% equity ownership. The remaining shares are held by Kwanati – an investment consortium comprising Ata Capital, DBF Capital and Kwande Energy – as well as by employees through a share ownership scheme.

Service excellence and strategic CSI

Over the past twenty years, Masana has forged enduring relationships with leading organisations across the country, offering high-quality products and services alongside strategic partnerships with bp, Castrol and Energy and Combustion Services (ECS), a key player in industrial energy management solutions.

Masana’s commitment to social impact goes beyond business. True to its values, the company has championed and contributed to numerous corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives. These span critical areas such as health care, education, youth development, rural community upliftment, environmental awareness and waste management.

“We wish to thank all our valued stakeholders and business partners for your dedication, collaboration and support that has enabled this milestone. It is this dedication, collaboration and support that will ensure continued excellence with our partners,” concludes Sithole.

Editor’s comment: It’s inspiring to see Masana not only delivering energy solutions but also energising lives via CSI initiatives reflecting a deeper purpose beyond profit – a determination to create a more inclusive, empowered and sustainable South Africa for generations to come. Happy birthday Masana!
