JC Auditors (JCA) recently completed the ISO 3834 surveillance audit for GRW, confirming that the company continues to meet the stringent international requirements for welding quality management in the manufacture of high-specification road tankers and trailers.

Unlike a once-off achievement, ISO 3834 certification must be maintained through regular audits and full recertification every three years. The recent surveillance audit confirmed that the systems, technical controls and engineering disciplines required by the standard have long been embedded in GRW’s manufacturing culture.

The audit was conducted by JCA technical specialist Herman Potgieter, who verified that GRW’s welding coordination, procedures, traceability systems and quality controls remain aligned with international best practice.

The significance of ISO 3834 extends far beyond welding compliance. The standard provides a comprehensive framework governing welding procedures, welder competence, material traceability, inspection and metallurgical control throughout the fabrication process.

In industries such as tanker manufacturing – where vehicles transport hazardous liquids, fuels and chemicals across public road networks – welding integrity is fundamental to safety.

Properly implemented welding quality management reduces the risk of structural failures, product leaks and catastrophic incidents. In this way, ISO 3834 certification plays an important role in supporting broader road safety objectives in South Africa by ensuring that critical transport equipment is manufactured to the highest possible engineering standards.

JC Auditors’ involvement with the tanker manufacturing sector spans more than two decades through its auditing activities in the Road Transport Management System (RTMS) programme.

“Over the past 20 years of RTMS audits, JCA auditors have encountered countless GRW tankers and trailers operating within fleets across South Africa, particularly within the dangerous goods transport sector,” says Naidoo.

Inside Worcester: advanced manufacturing at scale
During the certificate handover visit at GRW Worcester headquarters, JCA representatives were given a tour of the approximately 40 000 m² advanced manufacturing facility, where the scale and technical sophistication of the operation were clearly evident.

The site visit showcased an impressive range of modern manufacturing technologies, including automated and robotic welding systems, advanced CNC machining capabilities, precision cutting technologies, specialised stainless-steel fabrication processes and digitally integrated production lines.

These systems are supported by rigorous inspection processes, material verification protocols and metallurgical testing methods that ensure each tanker produced meets both structural and regulatory requirements.

The facility produces up to 1 500 tankers annually, incorporating advanced fabrication technologies including automated welding systems and specialised joining processes, supported by strict metallurgical controls required for transporting hazardous and food-grade liquids.

GRW COO Gillaume Hager used the occasion to recognise the technical teams behind the certification and highlighted the depth of experience within the organisation, noting that many of the company’s welders bring decades of practical expertise to the operation.

Hager also emphasised that GRW products must comply with multiple international regulatory regimes depending on export destinations, including European, UK and Australian technical requirements, in addition to South African regulatory standards.
