Global News: Hydrogen trucking in Europe: industry leaders target integrated supply and support ecosystem

The race to scale hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucking is moving beyond vehicle technology to the much bigger challenge of creating an environment that effectively supports commercial fleet deployment. For the first time in Europe, Germany is bringing together the full hydrogen mobility supply chain to create an ecosystem capable of scaling the deployment of hydrogen trucks by 2030.

Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility, MB Energy and other companies are joining forces with German policymakers to accelerate the commercialisation of hydrogen-powered mobility and build the ecosystem needed to scale it across the whole value chain, encompassing vehicles, infrastructure and supply.

The initiative has a particular focus on customer-oriented refuelling infrastructure and competitively priced hydrogen, with the objective of establishing a benchmark for a fully integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem for heavy-duty transport.

Infrastructure aligned with demand
A key element of the initiative will be the deployment of hydrogen refuelling stations along key strategic corridors in Europe, synchronised with hydrogen-powered truck fleets.

This coordinated approach is intended to address one of the central challenges facing hydrogen mobility: ensuring that vehicles, refuelling infrastructure and hydrogen supply develop in parallel and in line with customer requirements.

The participating companies say the activities will focus on creating the conditions for customers to operate hydrogen-powered vehicles with a competitive total cost of ownership. This will require not only the availability of hydrogen but reliable access to the fuel at viable price levels.

Complementing battery-electric solutions
The partners see hydrogen as part of a broader zero-emission transport mix rather than as an alternative that must replace battery-electric technology. According to the release, delivering a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem that complements battery-electric solutions requires coordinated development across the entire value chain.

This includes commercialising competitive vehicles, deploying strategically located refuelling infrastructure aligned with customer needs and ensuring reliable access to hydrogen at viable price levels.

Together, these elements are intended to create the conditions for a competitive total cost of ownership and position hydrogen as a practical, scalable solution for zero-emission transport.

Coordinated value chain
The scale of the collaboration reflects the complexity of establishing hydrogen mobility at commercial scale. Vehicle manufacturers alone cannot create the required ecosystem. Hydrogen supply, refuelling infrastructure, energy companies, industrial technology providers and supportive policy frameworks all need to develop in coordination.

The German initiative brings these elements together around a common objective: to establish the conditions required to scale hydrogen-powered heavy-duty transport along strategic freight corridors. The participating companies are therefore targeting not simply the deployment of hydrogen trucks, but the development of an integrated system capable of supporting their commercial operation.

Details to be unveiled at IAA
The full details of the initiative will be unveiled at a CEO-led press event during IAA Transportation in Hanover on 15 September. The announcement is expected to provide greater clarity on the planned deployment of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, the strategic corridors involved and the measures intended to support competitively priced hydrogen.

For the heavy-duty transport industry, the significance will lie in how effectively the various elements of the ecosystem can be synchronised around the needs of fleet customers.

The objective is clear: to move hydrogen-powered mobility beyond individual vehicle programmes and towards a fully integrated, customer-oriented ecosystem capable of delivering competitive zero-emission transport.

Editor’s comment: The most significant aspect of this collaboration is not only the linking of hands by competitive giants but the recognition that vehicles, infrastructure and supply have to scale together. The phrase “integrated hydrogen supply chain and infrastructure” gets to the heart of the challenge. A strong OEM offering is necessary but it is only one component of a commercially viable hydrogen transport system. The real test will be whether strategic refuelling infrastructure, reliable hydrogen supply and competitive pricing can be simultaneously aligned with customer demand. The details to be revealed at the IAA next week on 15 September should tell us whether this will become a genuine alternative ecosystem for heavy-duty trucking or simply another collection of promising hydrogen initiatives.
