Collaboration puts driver wellbeing at the heart of safer road freight

Posted on: September 10, 2026

From the truck cab to the fleet workshop, from the depot to the road, collaboration between truckers, truck manufacturers, industry bodies and wellness providers can help create a safer and more sustainable transport environment. Driven by this holistic understanding, Worcester-based Vallei Organies recently became the 12th Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) customer to successfully complete the OEM’s Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme.

The programme was developed in partnership with Trucking Wellness under the guidance of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry’s (NBCRFLI) Trucking Wellness Project.

The Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme supports transport operators in establishing and embedding workplace wellness practices that prioritise employee health, safety and wellbeing.

Through a structured approach, participating companies are equipped to strengthen their wellness policies and initiatives, with the potential to contribute to healthier employees, improved operational performance, reduced absenteeism and enhanced fleet uptime.

The programme aligns with the broader objectives of the Trucking Wellness Project, which has positively impacted thousands of truck drivers and employees across South Africa’s road-freight and logistics sector. Through a network of fixed roadside wellness centres and mobile healthcare facilities, Trucking Wellness provides access to essential primary healthcare services, helping to improve health outcomes across the industry.

For fleet operators, the benefits extend beyond individual employees. A driver’s health and wellbeing can influence concentration, decision-making and their ability to manage the demands of long-distance and commercial driving. In turn, supporting healthier drivers contributes to safer vehicle operation, more resilient fleets and safer roads.

Shared value through collaboration
Gerhardus Neethling, managing director at Vallei Organies, welcomed the milestone:

“A huge thank you to Daimler Truck Southern Africa for making the Fleet Owners Workplace Wellness Program with Trucking Wellness possible. It’s encouraging to see a company investing in the health and wellbeing of truck drivers. Healthy drivers mean safer roads, stronger families and a better transport industry. Thank you for giving truckers this valuable opportunity and for showing that workplace health truly matters.”

Tertius Wessels, managing director of the Corridor Empowerment Project, which manages Trucking Wellness on behalf of the NBCRFLI, said: “The DTSA Fleet Owners Workplace Wellness Programme was developed on the concept of shared value, introduced through the DTSA and Trucking Wellness partnership, where all role-players share in the value of outcomes and impact.

“The implementation of the DTSA Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme by Trucking Wellness, a programme of the NBCRFLI, at Vallei Organies, with the support of Orbit Commercial Vehicles, stands as a tangible example of shared value in action, demonstrating how collaboration can create meaningful health and business benefits for everyone involved.”

The partnership demonstrates that workplace wellness need not sit apart from fleet performance. Instead, it can become part of a broader operational approach in which people, vehicles and business outcomes are considered together.

Health, safety and the communities on the road
Commenting on the importance of the programme, Maretha Gerber, president and group CEO of Daimler Truck Southern Africa, said: “Health and Traffic Safety is a key pillar of Daimler Truck Southern Africa’s corporate social responsibility programme, Daimler Truck Cares.

“We congratulate Vallei Organies on successfully completing the Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme and for demonstrating strong leadership in prioritising employee health and wellbeing.

“Investing in people is an investment in the future of any business. Beyond the direct benefits to employees and operations, programmes such as these contribute to healthier communities, a more resilient transport industry and safer South African roads. We are grateful to Trucking Wellness for its longstanding partnership and shared commitment to improving the lives of those who keep our economy moving.”

For an industry that connects virtually every part of the economy, the concept of community is particularly important. Trucks do not operate in isolation. They move through towns and cities, connect producers with markets and deliver the goods on which businesses and households depend.

The wellbeing of the people behind the wheel is therefore entwined with the wellbeing of the wider communities through which the freight network operates.

Cornel Oelofse, franchise executive of Orbit Commercial Vehicles Cape Town, added: “A healthy driver is a safer driver. Congratulations to Vallei Organies on this outstanding milestone and for putting driver wellbeing at the centre of its operation.

“Thank you to Daimler Truck Southern Africa for its commitment to making programmes like this accessible to customers and helping build a safer, healthier road freight industry for South Africa.”

Vallei Organies – growing through partnership
Founded in 2006, Vallei Organies has grown into a diversified business serving the agricultural, transport and automotive sectors. Built on a foundation of hard work, integrity and customer service, the company has developed a reputation as a trusted partner to its clients and communities.

Today, the business operates through three complementary divisions: Vallei Organies, providing agricultural and organic fertiliser-related services; Vallei TPT, delivering specialised transport and logistics solutions; and Vallei Auto, offering vehicle-related products and services.

Across its operations, Vallei Organies is “guided by values of reliability, professionalism, accountability and long-term partnership, underpinned by a commitment to quality service, safety and sustainable business practices,” says Neethling.

Completion of the Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme is testament to Vallei Organies’ operational ethos which extends beyond business performance to the people who make that performance possible.

“These values have enabled the company to build lasting relationships with customers, employees and stakeholders while continuing to grow and evolve,” Neethling concludes.

Editor’s comment: The road freight industry is ultimately a people business operating through machines. The safest truck, the best fleet-management system and the most efficient logistics operation still depend on people who are healthy, alert and supported. Vallei Organies’ completion of the Wellness Programme is therefore a shining example of why collaboration is critical. When truck manufacturers, fleet operators, wellness specialists and industry bodies work together, the benefits can move beyond the cab and the company to families, communities and every road user sharing the network.
