Hey all you Rugger-Buggers – which is basically everyone in South Africa. Here’s some good news on the trucking/sporting front. Isuzu Motors Limited has announced an official automotive partnership with World Rugby for the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 and Women’s Rugby World Cup 2029, bringing the global commercial vehicle manufacturer onto rugby’s biggest international stage. FleetWatch Correspondent Paul Collings reports.
For South Africa, where rugby unites all South Africans in the most inspirational way, the announcement carries particular resonance. Think ‘legacy’ – the Springboks are reigning world champions (and look set for a fifth hoisting of the Web Ellis Cup), while Isuzu has served the country’s trucking community with passionate customer-focus since 1964.
There is also a neat link between the two worlds as there’s a ‘truck and trailer’ which sometimes comes into play in a rugby match. This happens when the ball carrier and one or more teammates break away or detach from the main body of the maul (or when players run ahead of the ball carrier) without defenders being able to fairly contest the ball. In this scenario, the players in front act as an illegal “truck” shielding the “trailer” – the ball carrier – which results in a penalty for obstruction.
This partnership is one that brings together two powerful expressions of performance and collective effort, while giving Isuzu an international platform to demonstrate its evolution beyond vehicle manufacturing towards becoming a commercial mobility solutions company.
Two World Cups, one global partnership
Announced on 21 October, the agreement covers the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 and Women’s Rugby World Cup 2029, both hosted by Australia.
For Isuzu, the partnership supports its mid-term business plan, ISUZU Transformation – Growth to 2030 (IX), which expands the company’s focus beyond products to encompass solutions that support the movement of goods and people around the world.
The alignment with rugby is clear. The sport’s core values, as defined in the World Rugby Playing Charter, are integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect. These are values that also resonate with the commercial vehicle industry, where reliability, teamwork and performance underpin the daily movement of people and goods.
Isuzu’s purpose, “Moving the World – for You”, reflects this shared emphasis on getting people and things where they need to be. Through the partnership, the company plans to strengthen its brand communications across global markets, engaging with rugby fans and wider audiences through both tournaments.
The agreement also comes as Isuzu approaches its 90th anniversary in 2027, giving the company an opportunity to mark the milestone while showcasing its transformation and ambitions on a global stage.
Mobility solutions behind the scenes
Beyond brand visibility, the partnership has a practical operational dimension.
For the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2029, Isuzu and World Rugby will explore how the manufacturer can support tournament operations through mobility solutions using its commercial trucks, bakkies and other vehicles. The aim is to help ensure the safe and smooth transportation of participating teams and tournament personnel.
The precise arrangements remain to be explored but the principle is familiar to the road freight industry: major events depend on effective logistics behind the scenes, with people, products and equipment needing to reach the right place at the right time.
Isuzu also plans to use opportunities throughout the tournaments to communicate its values and its evolution into a commercial mobility solutions company.
A milestone for Isuzu
Naohiro Yamaguchi, President and CEO of Isuzu Motors Limited, says the partnership provides an opportunity to share the company’s journey with a global audience.
“The year 2027, when Rugby World Cup kicks off, will also mark Isuzu’s 90th anniversary since its establishment,” he says.
“We are deeply honoured to become a partner of Rugby World Cup, an event that inspires people around the world and to have the opportunity to showcase our journey towards becoming a commercial mobility solutions company on the global stage.”
Yamaguchi adds that Isuzu will embrace rugby’s spirit of taking on challenges as one team and work closely with World Rugby to contribute to the success of both tournaments.
Michel Poussau, Chief Revenue Officer at World Rugby, welcomes Isuzu to the organisation’s partnership network, pointing to the opportunities the agreement creates as rugby continues to grow its global reach.
“We are delighted to welcome Isuzu Motors to the World Rugby family as an Official Automotive Partner of the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 and Women’s Rugby World Cup 2029,” he says.
Poussau adds that the partnership will help unlock new opportunities for the sport and its fans, with momentum building towards the 2027 men’s tournament and the women’s event continuing rugby’s growth trajectory.
World Rugby and Isuzu will work together to support tournament operations and deliver two events that inspire and connect fans around the world.
