UD Trucks intros ‘Service Exchange’ parts replacement for better fleet profitability

Posted on: October 15, 2026

In an industry where operating costs, vehicle availability and maintenance expenditure directly influence fleet profitability, parts supply innovation has an increasingly important role to play. For truck fleet operators, extending vehicle life and managing the cost of major component replacement are essential to protecting margins and maintaining productivity.

With this understanding, UD Trucks Southern Africa is expanding its aftersales offering with its new ‘Service Exchange Programme’ giving customers an alternative to purchasing new replacement components while supporting uptime, operational efficiency and total operating value.

A stronger parts proposition
UD Trucks Southern Africa’s Service Exchange allows customers to exchange eligible worn or damaged components for professionally restored units, providing an additional option between repairing an existing component and purchasing a new replacement.

The programme launches with engines, gearboxes and injectors, with plans to extend the offering to cylinder heads, starters, alternators, turbochargers and retarders.

“At UD Trucks, Ultimate Dependability is everything; it’s about delivering value beyond the initial vehicle purchase and supporting our customers throughout the lifecycle of their trucks and giving them solutions that help keep their businesses moving,” says Filip Van den Heede, Managing Director of UD Trucks Southern Africa.

When a component requires replacement, a UD Trucks dealer assesses the vehicle and determines whether a Service Exchange unit is available and appropriate. The customer’s worn component – known as the ‘core’ – is then returned in accordance with programme requirements for potential restoration and future use.

Depending on the application, component availability and repair requirements, Service Exchange can help operators manage maintenance expenditure and vehicle downtime. Components supplied through the programme carry a one-year warranty, subject to applicable terms and conditions.

Sanjay Naipal, Aftermarket Director at UD Trucks Southern Africa, says the programme is an important development in the company’s aftermarket strategy:

“Customers operate in different environments and have different business priorities. A strong aftermarket proposition therefore cannot be one-dimensional. We need to provide customers with relevant choices that support their operational and commercial requirements.

“Service Exchange adds another solution to that portfolio. It allows us to engage with customers earlier in the repair decision and demonstrate the broader value we can provide throughout the life of their vehicle.”

Creating greater value
The programme also strengthens the commercial opportunity for UD Trucks dealers by enabling Service Advisors and workshop teams to present customers with a broader range of solutions when major components require replacement.

Rather than treating component replacement as a single transaction, dealers can help operators assess available options against vehicle application, component eligibility, availability, operating requirements and total value. This reinforces their role as long-term business partners rather than simply points of repair.

“Service Exchange gives our dealers another way to demonstrate the value of the UD Trucks aftermarket,” says Deon Fourie, General Manager: Commercial Parts at UD Trucks Southern Africa.

“It creates an opportunity to have a more meaningful conversation with customers about their operational requirements and the options available to them. Ultimately, the objective is to help customers make informed decisions while keeping their vehicles productive.”

The programme is also intended to strengthen customer retention by creating further opportunities for dealers to remain engaged with operators throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

Supporting a more sustainable aftermarket
Service Exchange, says UD Trucks Southern Africa, introduces a more circular approach to component management. Suitable cores can be recovered, professionally restored and returned to service, reducing the need for every replacement requirement to be met with a new component.

By extending component utilisation while providing additional replacement options, the programme supports both the commercial and sustainability objectives of the aftermarket proposition.

As mentioned, the programme will initially cover engines, gearboxes and injectors and customers requiring a replacement unit are encouraged to contact their nearest UD Trucks dealer or Service Advisor to establish whether a suitable Service Exchange solution is available. Dealers can provide information on component eligibility, availability, pricing, core-return requirements and warranty coverage.

Editor’s comment: Parts supply and, in general, aftermarket innovations, are more than a means of supporting customers after the initial vehicle sale. They are an increasingly important lever for fleet profitability, helping operators manage maintenance costs, reduce avoidable downtime and extract greater value from their assets. Offerings such as UD Trucks SA’s Service Exchange demonstrate how component recovery and restoration can align commercial objectives with more sustainable resource use. The real measure of success will be the value delivered to operators in practice – through component availability, dependable performance and competitive lifecycle costs.
