Isuzu Motors SA – Sixty and counting

Posted on: August 6, 2026

For global truck OEMs, the ability to combine proven engineering with vehicles developed for local conditions has become a prerequisite for market success. Proving this fact is Isuzu Motors South Africa which is currently preparing to launch its all-New Generation Truck – the latest chapter in a commercial vehicle story that stretches back more than 60 years in South Africa and over a century globally.

While the new model will introduce the latest technologies and refinements, Isuzu says its development philosophy remains unchanged: build trucks around the needs of the people who operate them.

For a company that has led South Africa’s combined medium and heavy truck market, excluding vans and buses, for 13 consecutive years, the forthcoming launch represents an evolution rather than a reinvention.

Engineering shaped by South African operators
The first Isuzu Elfin TKG10 1.5-ton truck arrived in South Africa in 1964, long before localisation and “built for Africa” became standard marketing language.

Since then, successive generations of J-Series, N-Series, F-Series, G-Series and FX/FY heavy-duty trucks have reflected changing customer requirements rather than changing fashions. Greater payloads, lower fuel consumption, improved driver comfort, enhanced safety systems and reduced operating costs have all been introduced in response to how trucks are actually used in Southern Africa.

Today the range serves sectors as diverse as municipal services, agriculture, mining, construction, distribution and long-haul logistics.

“Every truck we have introduced over the past six decades has been shaped by the people who rely on them every day,” says Billy Tom, president of Isuzu Motors South Africa. “Our customers have been instrumental in our journey. They have challenged us to continuously improve, to innovate and to build trucks that are not only dependable but also deliver real value to their businesses. That customer-first philosophy remains at the heart of everything we do.”

A commercial vehicle specialist
Unlike many manufacturers whose truck businesses sit alongside passenger vehicle operations, Isuzu has remained focused almost exclusively on commercial vehicles for more than 100 years.

That singular focus has helped establish the brand’s reputation among fleet operators, municipalities, owner-drivers and logistics companies looking for dependable vehicles capable of withstanding demanding operating environments while keeping downtime and lifecycle costs under control.

South Africa has also become an important part of the company’s global manufacturing footprint. Vehicles assembled at Isuzu’s Gqeberha plant serve both the local market and export customers across Sub-Saharan Africa, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to local manufacturing following Isuzu Motors Limited’s acquisition of the South African operation in 2018.

Preparing for the next generation
As transport technologies continue to evolve, Isuzu has broadened its development programmes to include Euro 5 engines that do not require AdBlue, Dual Fuel diesel-gas hybrids, compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks and battery-electric vehicles.

Rather than pursuing technology for its own sake, the company says its objective remains practical solutions that deliver measurable operational benefits under Southern African conditions.

“Customers’ businesses continue to evolve, and so do their expectations,” says Tom.

“They need vehicles that are more productive, more efficient, safer and easier to operate than ever before. Our responsibility is to continue listening, continue innovating and continue delivering transport solutions that help our customers succeed.”

Building on a proven formula
The arrival of the all-New Generation Truck is essentially an extension of a philosophy that has underpinned Isuzu’s success for decades – applying proven engineering to vehicles developed around local operating realities.

“Our heritage gives us confidence but it does not define our future,” concludes Tom.

“The next generation of Isuzu trucks builds on everything we have learnt over the past 60 years while embracing the technologies and innovations that will shape the future of transport. We are proud of where we have come from but we are even more excited about where we are going.”

Editor’s comment: Many manufacturers talk about building trucks for Africa. Isuzu’s advantage is that it has spent more than six decades doing exactly that. The forthcoming all-New Generation Truck will ultimately be judged by how well it delivers on the fundamentals that are crucial for operators – reliability, durability, efficiency and total cost of ownership. If history is any guide, those remain the benchmarks against which the market will measure it.
