While many provincial roads across South Africa continue to deteriorate under the weight of inadequate maintenance, the country’s toll concessionaires are demonstrating what sustained investment in strategic road infrastructure can achieve.
For the road freight industry, well-maintained corridors such as the N4 remain essential to reducing operating costs, improving safety and ensuring reliable journey times. The latest milestone on Bakwena’s N4 upgrade highlights the value of long-term concession models in delivering infrastructure that keeps freight and commuters moving.
New dual carriageway section eases traffic flow
Truckers and motorists travelling on the N4 between Marikana and Buffelspoort are now benefitting from improved traffic flow following the partial opening of a newly constructed section of dual carriageway by Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Bakwena).
The new section forms part of the ongoing N4 Dualling Project between the Buffelspoort and Dr Moroka interchanges, covering 37.2 km. One lane remains closed while construction teams complete ancillary works, ensuring the safety of both road users and construction personnel.
The opening represents another significant milestone in the upgrade of one of South Africa’s busiest freight and commuter corridors and marks substantial progress towards completion of the project.
“We thank our communities and motorists for their patience and cooperation as we undertake these vital improvements to ensure safer and more efficient travel along the N4 corridor,” said Bakwena chief operating officer Solly Kganyago.
Investment in freight efficiency and road safety
The dualling project forms part of Bakwena’s continued investment in improving the safety, capacity and operational efficiency of the N4, a strategic corridor that carries high volumes of commercial freight as well as commuter traffic.
Truckers and motorists are urged to exercise caution while travelling through the construction zone, obey all posted signage, comply with reduced speed limits and remain vigilant until the remaining works have been completed.
Bakwena says it remains committed to delivering infrastructure that supports economic growth, strengthens regional connectivity and provides safer travel for all road users.
