Good News trucking: The warm heart of trucking beats again in community upliftment project

Posted on: June 11, 2026

Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) and its retail dealership, Sandown Commercial Vehicles Centurion, have strengthened their commitment to community development through a major education-focused initiative at Sinethemba High School in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape.

The project stems from a visit to the school during DTSA’s 2024 Mandela Day activities in partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation. During that visit, the scale of the school’s infrastructure and resource needs became apparent, prompting a commitment to provide further support. The involvement of Sandown Commercial Vehicles Centurion enabled the initiative to expand significantly.

Creating a better learning environment
Recognising the role education plays in creating long-term opportunities, the DTSA Group of Companies undertook the renovation of classrooms and the school’s library. Computers were also donated to complete the school’s computer laboratory, giving learners improved access to digital learning resources.

The Eastern Cape holds particular significance for DTSA as the home of its assembly plant and many of its employees, making investment in surrounding communities a natural extension of the company’s broader commitment to sustainable development.

Building on an ongoing commitment
Maretha Gerber, President and Group CEO of DTSA, says the project reflects the company’s belief that meaningful investment in education can help create lasting change.

“Education remains a key pillar of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy and having the opportunity to make a lasting impact in a community that is both vital to our operations and home to many of our employees is truly meaningful and close to our hearts.

“The need for educational support, resources and adequate infrastructure in South Africa remains immense and we are proud to play our part in driving meaningful, sustainable change, because every learner deserves a fair chance to succeed. Our work at Sinethemba High School is not done and we hope to return to continue this journey and help build an environment where learners are supported, inspired and equipped to shape their futures,” she adds.

Partnership amplifies impact
The initiative was delivered in partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation, whose involvement helped ensure the effective implementation of the project and supports its long-term sustainability.

Mark Croxon, CEO of Sandown Commercial Vehicles Centurion, says supporting the initiative was a natural fit for the dealership: “When we first learned about the Sinethemba High School project, we knew immediately that we wanted to be part of it.

“Our trucks help keep Africa moving and they are assembled in the Eastern Cape, therefore supporting this community felt both natural and necessary. Sandown Commercial Vehicles Centurion is immensely proud to contribute to this initiative and we look forward to continuing our support as the project progresses.”

Editor’s Comment: In a world characterised by conflict and turmoil, actions as this coming from the trucking industry really serve to uplift the spirit.
