Bakwena boosts N1N4 safety measures for smooth Easter traffic flow

Posted on: March 25, 2026

Truckers, fleet operators and every road user relying on the N1 and N4 corridors stand to benefit from a stepped-up Easter safety drive as Bakwena rolls out a comprehensive plan to manage one of the busiest travel periods on South Africa’s highways.

As holiday traffic builds across Gauteng, Limpopo and North West, Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Bakwena) is again reinforcing its operational footprint – a move that will be particularly welcomed by long-haul drivers navigating tight schedules alongside peak leisure traffic.

Reinforcing visibility on the corridor
At the heart of the 2026 Easter campaign is Bakwena’s 14-year collaboration with Motus Corporation, which sees additional vehicles deployed to strengthen on-route support.

On 27 March, six Renault Captur units – each carrying a 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating – will be handed over to Bakwena and law enforcement authorities. These vehicles will be used for route surveillance, crash response and direct assistance to road users during peak volumes.

“This Easter Safety Campaign marks Renault’s 4th year of partnering with Bakwena. We look forward to a continued collaboration in ensuring our roads become safer for both motorists and pedestrians alike over high volume travel periods,” says Nosipho Manitshana, VP Marketing & Communications Renault SA.

(Editor’s note: Corporate sponsors should never forget to mention truck drivers and bus/minibus passengers in their road safety promotions. The truckers are out on their own during off-peak periods but certainly share the roads with motorists during peak-holiday times).

Shared responsibility on busy roads
Operational readiness is being matched with a renewed call for driver discipline – a critical factor for truck drivers and fleet operators sharing the road with a surge in private vehicles.

“As we prepare for the major influx of traffic, we want to remind road users that the road is a shared space,” states Solomon Kganyago, Chief Operations Officer at Bakwena. “It takes one good decision to save a life. We urge motorists to buckle up, obey speed limits, and ensure both drivers and vehicles are fit for the journey.” (Editor’s note: We can assume Bakwena includes truck drivers in this ‘reminder’.)

Holiday operations: flow, enforcement and fatigue
To ease congestion and support smoother freight movement, Bakwena will suspend major roadworks along the corridor during the upcoming holiday period. This is expected to reduce bottlenecks – a key concern for time-sensitive logistics operations.

Law enforcement visibility will be increased, alongside Bakwena patrols, to promote compliance and rapid incident response.

Drivers are also being urged to adopt strict fatigue management practices, stopping every two hours or 200 km – a message particularly relevant to long-distance truckers operating under delivery pressure.

Managing peak congestion
Bakwena has flagged several high-risk congestion windows:

  • Thursday, 2 April: 12:00 – 21:00
  • Friday, 3 April: 06:00 – 15:00
  • Monday, 6 April: 12:00 – 21:00

(Editor’s note: Fleet operators are advised to plan dispatch and routing around these periods where possible to minimise delays and maintain delivery efficiency.)

Faster tolling, smoother transit
Efficient toll payment remains a key lever in keeping traffic flowing. While cash and card payments are accepted, Bakwena continues to emphasise the benefits of SANRAL tags for seamless passage through plazas. Bakwena also encourages drivers to ensure tags are topped up ahead of departure, with multiple facilities available along the route, including key petroports and Bakwena’s Hatfield office in Pretoria.

Emergency readiness on standby
A 24/7 emergency line – 0800 BAKWENA (0800 225 9362) – will be active throughout the period. Drivers are reminded to reference blue kilometre markers when calling for assistance to enable rapid response.

Editor’s comment: Bakwena’s Easter deployment underscores a critical reality – that highway safety is not simply about accident prevention – it is essential to logistics continuity. For truckers moving essential goods across the N1/N4 corridor, reduced congestion, visible enforcement and rapid incident response will certainly bring a degree of relief from the typical ‘holiday highway madness’. Way to go, Bakwena! Safe travels, truckers!
