Yes, we all hate roadworks for interrupting our trips but once they are done, those trips become pure joy contributing to improved transport efficiencies via faster trip times and, of course, safer travel.
With this in mind, Bakwena N1N4 (Bakwena) has announced upcoming road maintenance and rehabilitation projects on the N1N4 route, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing road safety and improving driving conditions.
In 2024, Bakwena invested approximately R300-million in construction and maintenance along its route, which extends from Bela Bela on the N1 south to Pretoria and westward along the N4 to the Botswana border. Building on this foundation, a major investment estimated at R600-million is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2025 as part of the broader Bakwena approach to road-user safety.
Bakwena carries out both periodic and routine maintenance, as well as up-grade works. Currently the concessionaire is busy with a major upgrade of the N4 between Buffelspoort and Dr Moroka interchanges in Rustenburg. Launched in March 2024, this 43-month contract – with an investment of R1.33-billion – is aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety for road users by expanding the roadway to two lanes in each direction.
Two new major rehabilitation projects have been awarded for sections of the N1N4 route. They are:
N1 between Proefplaas Interchange to Pumulani Main Line Plaza
This 15-month contract kicked off at the beginning of August 2025 with its mobilisation plan. Construction is set to start on 1 October 2025 with a completion date of November 2026. The project value is R276-million and the contract has been awarded to Roadmac Surfacing.
The project involves extensive removal and reconstruction of pavement layers, crack sealing and overlaying of the entire carriageway. Work will be conducted both during the day and at night, with lane closures managed to ensure all lanes remain open during peak traffic hours (southbound mornings from 05:30 to 09:30 and northbound afternoons from 15:00 to 18:30). Outside these peak times, one lane per direction will be closed.
N4 between Zeerust and Botswana border
The second rehabilitation project planned is a 21-month rehabilitation project due to start in September with a three-month site establishment with construction taking place from January 2026 to approximately June 2027. The contractor carrying out the works is Roadmac Surfacing.
With a project value of R324-million, works include full-depth reconstruction of the pavement layers, crack sealing and overlaying. Due to the nature of the works, traffic will be reduced with lane closures of approximately five kilometres in each direction managed by stop/go systems. Drivers should anticipate delays and plan accordingly.
