Power Blues . . .

Little attention has been paid to the effect of the electricity power crisis on the trucking industry writes Patrick O’Leary who warns that cost is being added on many fronts.

Shed No Load. . .
The power outages
brought about by Eskom's load shedding have affected all South Africans, both personally and in business.

Special Report – Road Safety

Trucking’s Rolling Maul . . .

While silverware in the form of the Web Ellis trophy may sit proudly in SARFU’s boardroom, there is a lot more metalwork being dragged to the truck scrap heap, stained with human blood writes Paul Collings

Bone Tired . . .

Driver fatigue is a serious killer with as much as 50% of South Africa’s fatal truck accidents being ascribed to drivers dozing off behind the wheel reports Paul Collings

Safe as Houses . . .

The truck cab is the ‘home-away-from-home’ for drivers and assistants and today’s premium truck models are more comfortable and safer than most luxury cars.

Seeing is believing . . .

Transporters are about to experience the ‘next wave’ in Fleet Management, suggests one technology vendor whose product is an in-cab video camera.

When Oxygen Kills. . .

The high incidence of road fatalities caused directly by tyre failure is a fact of South African motoring life and while both shocking and tragic, it may have more than a little to do with ignorance about what constitutes a healthy tyre, writes Paul Collings.

Road Safety needs YOU!. . .

It’s up to YOU over Easter to play a role in reducing the road accident carnage that continues to plague our country. So says Ian Auret, chairman of the Bridgestone/CARS (Committee for Active Road Safety).

Technical Watch

Hydraulics: ‘May the force work for you’ . . .

In today’s world we ‘sweat the assets’ and there’s no room for downtime because of ignorance over hydraulics that drive materials handling equipment writes FleetWatch technical correspondent Dave Scott

A FleetWatch Exclusive

Brake & Tyre Watch . . .

In November last year, the FleetWatch Brake & Tyre Watch team took off for KwaZulu-Natal to check out the condition of trucks driving on the N3 at night. What we found was not exactly what we expected.

‘NON’ Reflective tape abounds. . .

DAWN WILLIAMS, sales executive at 3M South Africa, joined us in KZN not only to give training to the cops on the legislation and application of conspicuity tape but also to check out the condition of the tape on vehicles brought in for testing.

Night Riders . . .

Our resident trailer expert Wolfgang Lehmann comments on some of the faults picked up during the evening exercise in KZN.

Brakes!
What brakes? . . .

Wabco’s Billy Sinclair is shocked at the state of the braking systems on many of the vehicles using our roads.

Tyre Faults . . .

Marcus Haw, our tyre expert from Bridgestone South Africa, discusses tyre faults picked up on the vehicles tested during our KZN exercise.

Biodiesel – Part Two . . .

FleetWatch correspondent Max Braun discusses issues and inputs that need to be considered in the overall biodiesel debate. If ever anyone thought of biodiesel as being the easy answer to our environmental woes, think again.

What is the scenario in the  EU, UK and USA?. . .

TO GET A bird’s eye view of what’s happening in the UK, we quote comments by Louise Cole, deputy editor of Commercial Motor, UK. “Acceptance is mixed - there are large companies such as supermarket Asda who trialled it and decided it wasn't for them.

Are there preferred feedstocks?. . .

CURRENTLY THE USA favours soybean oil for biodiesel while Europe prefers rapeseed oil.

Oil companies - what will their role be?. . .

IT IS WIDELY known that the major oil companies support the introduction of a national biofuels industry strategy and will ultimately play an important part in the success of the programme.

What do the OEMS say?. . .

PROBABLY THE MOST important input in any discussion around the complex issue of biofuels is what the vehicle and engine manufacturers are saying and permitting for use in their equipment without impairing warranties and expected useful life.

What truckers need to know?. . .

Whether a large or small fleet owner, a sub-contractor, SMME or ownerdriver, it will not be wise to accept any biodiesel product regardless of the claims made for it without undertaking a simple but thorough investigation into the ability of the supplier to consistently produce a quality product that will not damage your vehicles.

Professional Driving Permit PrDP Update. . .

The latest amendments to the National Road Traffic Act published in the Government Gazette dated 8 February 2008, (NO.30763, Vol 512) will impact on transporters of dangerous goods, drivers and training providers.
