Generous spirit of truckers shines through

FleetWatch editor Patrick O’Leary (right) presents the certificate highlighting the names of all those who donated money to the cause to Philip Hull (centre) and Barry Niemand of Community Medical Services. Well done to the Call to Action delegates for opening your hearts and your wallets. You are Super Stars.

One of the sidelines at the Call to Action day was to raise funds for Community Medical Services in support of the great work they do in helping save lives in the Van Reenen’s Pass area.

Operating out of their Help Center at the top of Van Reenen’s Pass, Community Medical Services was started some 28 years ago by Philip Hull who gathered together a group of volunteers , mainly paramedics and mechanics – to help stranded truckers and motorists and more importantly, accidents victims during peak traffic periods.

Over the years, Philip and his team have saved hundreds of lives and helped countless poeple who have been stranded on the pass. A lot of this activity has been funded out of Philip’s own pocket.

The last time we saw them in action was during the heavy snowstorm in July when Philip and his colleague, Barry Niemand, worked in wet, cold and miserable conditions throughout the night towing some 90 cars up the pass to safety – and then went back to check that the truck drivers were OK.

With the help and generosity of SANRAL, who sponsored the table centre pieces comprised of a specially made wire truck filled with goodies, delegates were asked to hold individual table auctions to raise money for this wonderful organization.

We are thrilled to announce that a few grand under R40 000 was raised and FleetWatch made up the rest to bring the total to an amazing R40 000 raised on the day. Hull had no idea that this was being done and when phoned on the night to tell him that R40 000 had been donated, he was overcome with emotion at the generosity of the delegates.

FleetWatch presented a certificate commemorating the occasion to Philip and Barry in Johannesburg after the event. On the certificate was the name of each and every individual and company who donated money to the cause. The total amount was far more than we ever dreamed of and Philip has asked FleetWatch to pass on their thanks to each and every person and company who donated money. It was is much appreciated.
