South African truck trailer builders are global leaders when it comes to designing and fabricating innovative trailers that enhance operational efficiency and safety. Leading reefer manufacturer, Serco, has broadened its custom offering, recently delivering ten customised curtainside trailers to a leading beverage transporter. The new multi-mode trailers effectively cut loading and offloading times in half.

According to Serco CEO, Clinton Holcroft: “The multi-mode trailer is a new offering from Serco, designed with the capability to load and offload the vehicle from the side and the rear. The fast-opening curtain system improves loading and offloading times by more than 50%. This is especially beneficial for operations involving multiple drops, significantly enhancing overall efficiency.”

The client had previously used box-body vehicles with rear loading and wanted to improve loading efficiencies by enabling loading from the sides and the rear, Holcroft explains. “We achieved this with a state-of-the-art, fast-opening curtainside system with a rear mounted roll-over door.”

A feature that differentiates the new trailer from typical curtainsider designs is a five-wheel roller system that slides through a top and bottom track, says Holcroft: “The curtain folds up compactly and works without buckles for tensioning, thus doing away with having to deal with open or flapping curtains while travelling, typical of conventional curtainsiders when buckles are not tensioned correctly.”

Saving power

Additional features that help boost the overall efficiency and safety of the new design include a 3.5-ton capacity column-lift powered by roof mounted solar panels, a lightweight extruded aluminium floor, internal LED lighting and additional side-impact safety guards.

The ten completed trailers were delivered on time within a few weeks of the order being received. More units are in the pipeline, says Holcroft.

“Our ability to meet the tight delivery timelines while maintaining high quality is a testament to our commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence,” Holcroft concludes.
Here’s a FleetWatch toast to Serco for pushing the trailer innovation envelope and for stepping out of its ‘chilled’ comfort zone. Fortune does indeed favour the brave. Cheers!
