The Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) is out on the road with its Truck Road Safety Initiative, a campaign dedicated to improving safety for South Africa’s truck drivers and raising awareness about the vital role they play in the country’s economy. Running from 11th to 20th November in Mpumalanga, this initiative aims to address road safety concerns by providing essential information and resources to truck drivers and the broader public.

With over 80% of South Africa’s goods transported by road, trucks serve as the backbone of the economy, connecting industries and delivering essentials across the nation. As the primary route to Durban’s bustling port – handling up to 31.4-million tons of cargo annually – the N3 corridor bears a heavy load of freight traffic, making road safety an urgent priority.

In response to a recent series of tragic incidents, TETA has initiated this programme to ensure that truck drivers are empowered with safety resources and supported by informed, cooperative road users.

The Truck Road Safety Initiative features a series of educational roadshows across Mpumalanga, where drivers receive a comprehensive road safety booklet filled with essential tips and information on:

  • Safe driving practices for long-haul journeys
  • Proper vehicle maintenance and pre-trip inspections.
  • Health and wellness guidance to combat driver fatigue, and
  • Key steps to manage emergency situations.

TETA CEO Maphefo Anno-Frempong says: “This campaign reflects our commitment to the well-being of truck drivers and road users across South Africa. Truck drivers are often unsung heroes who work long hours under challenging conditions to keep our economy moving. This initiative provides them with practical support while promoting a shared culture of road safety.”

Aside from targeting truck drivers, the initiative also seeks to educate the public about the responsibilities of driving safely around trucks, as well as the importance of recognising truck drivers’ contributions to the economy.

Through the Truck Road Safety Initiative, TETA invites the community to join in fostering a safer environment for all road users, championing respect for those who keep our economy running and protecting lives on South African roads.
