Brake & Tyre Watch, a comprehensive training initiative aimed at enhancing road safety, concluded with resounding success in Springs on the 21st and 22nd June 2023. The event witnessed a full turnout of 60 Traffic Officials from the region, gathering valuable knowledge and practical skills to ensure safer heavy commercial vehicle operations.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from Trinity Mokoana, Superintendent: Skills Development Facilitator, at the Ekurhuleni Training Auditorium. The first day consisted of theory training sessions conducted by esteemed partners, covering critical topics such as axles, fifth wheels, tyres, braking systems, and more.

On the highly anticipated second day, participants put their theoretical knowledge into practice. The day began with engaging coffee sessions and question-and-answer sessions while awaiting the arrival of heavy commercial trucks at the Springs Testing Centre. A total of six trucks were inspected, with one passing, two discontinued, and three fined for various non-compliance issues.

One of the key objectives of Brake & Tyre Watch is to dispel the misconception that accidents are solely caused by brake failures or tire bursts. FleetWatch emphasises that proper maintenance and operator responsibility play a significant role in preventing such incidents.

The initiative aims to raise transport operators’ awareness regarding efficient braking and tyre checks, highlighting the importance of preventative maintenance on trucks. Additionally, it empowers Traffic Officials with specialised knowledge to intervene more effectively and remove unroadworthy vehicles from the roads. Brake & Tyre Watch has been successfully conducted nationwide since November 2005.

FleetWatch express their heartfelt gratitude to the esteemed partners whose support made this event possible. A special thanks to Bridgestone, ZF, JC Auditors, BPW, Santam, Standard Bank, Isuzu Motors South Africa, Orafol, MiX Telematics, Imperial, and TSE Big Max for their valuable contributions and commitment to road safety.

By equipping Traffic Officials with enhanced expertise, Brake & Tyre Watch continues to make a tangible impact on road safety and encourages responsible heavy commercial vehicle operations.
