It is perhaps ironical that the extremely cold spell expected to hit all over South Africa this week coincides with the ‘Blanket Drive’ held by HighWay Ministry, an interdenominational ministry directed at the trucking industry, to collect blankets for less privileged people which will be handed out to them on Mandela Day. The drive is being held in conjunction with the Road Traffic Management Corporation,
Jan de Bruyn, the man who heads HighWay Ministry and who has done so much for the industry over the years, asks everyone to open their hearts to this project.
“There are many people who do not have any protection against the cold and we would like, with your help, to give them a warmer winter. Let’s make a difference and give with a warm heart to keep someone warm this winter,” is his plea.
The ‘Blanket Drive’ coincides with HighWay Ministry’s Road Safety Awareness weekend which takes place from July 6 – 8 at the N3 Petro Port between Alberton and Heidelberg. So if you’re passing that way on those dates, you can drop off the blankets there or alternatively, they can be dropped off at the ministry’s offices at 15 Third Avenue, Jordan Park, Heidelberg.
Cash donations can also be given. The ministry has a supplier in Johannesburg who can make the blankets available at R85.00. For the bank account details – or any other information concerning this project – please contact Grieta Mitchley at highwaymin@lantic.net or phone her on 016-349-1996.
