Representatives from Unitrans and FoodForward attended the donation ceremony of this 8-ton truck which will complement FoodForward’s current fleet and will ensure that more people can benefit from the distribution of food that is rescued from various retailers.

Hats off to Unitrans Supply Chain Solutions for their generous donation of an 8-ton truck to FoodForward, an organisation which has made a huge difference to many thousands of lives in the fight against hunger in South Africa.

Unitrans, which has had a partnership with FoodForward for the past four years, went beyond the normal monetary contribution normally associated with NGO partnerships so as to tie in with its vision for Socio Economic Development in making a significant and sustainable impact.

The donation also underscores the words of the late, great Nelson Mandela who said: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” This is particularly significant with Mandela Day coming up on Tuesday, July 18th.

The handover ceremony took place in Johannesburg with representatives from Unitrans and FoodForward attending. This donation will complement Food Forward’s current fleet and will ensure that more people can benefit from the distribution of food that is rescued from various retailers.

For those of you not aware of the sterling work done by FoodForward SA, the organisation collects edible surplus food from manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers and redistributes this food to verified NPOs that collectively feed thousands of hungry people daily. The process is called foodbanking. Since all the food is free, for every R1 donated, FoodForward SA is able to rescue R13,87 worth of food value, making foodbanking affordable and scalable.

Among others, the various programmes include:

  • Food Rescue: Sourcing, collecting, sorting, storing and distributing – within date edible – surplus edible food from partners’ distribution centres.
  • Virtual FoodBanking: Beneficiary Organisations are linked to retail stores for the daily collection of surplus fruit, vegetables and general groceries via an online innovation called the Foodbanking Platform.
  • Food Management: Emerging farmers are supported and large-scale feeding programmes implemented.
  • School Breakfast programmes are implemented on behalf of corporate donors, providing in excess of 10 million meals annually.

Watch this video to see more of the great work done. And once again, salute to Unitrans Supply Chain Solutions for its donation to this worthy cause. The heart of the trucking industry again comes to the fore.
