Happy with the multiple benefits achieved through the fleet management solution implemented by MiX Telematics in co-operation with its Cape Town based channel partner, Tectra Telematics, are, from left: Anthony Healey, MD of H&M Removals; Angela Julies, fleet controller; and James Campbell-Miller, sales director.

FleetWatch has stated on more than one occasion that transport operators which do not use modern fleet management telematics systems are losing out on a huge host of benefits. From their early start-up days in the 1990s, fleet management systems have taken huge strides forward and are now essential tools to improve bottom line profits and ensure higher levels of professional transport operations.

An example of this came has once again come to light via the impressive results of a successful fleet management solution implemented for H&M Removals by MiX Telematics in cooperation with its Cape Town based channel partner, Tectra Telematics.

“In April 2013, H&M’s Fleet Controller selected the MiX Fleet Manager solution to help reduce the company’s risk in terms of driver behaviour, fleet efficiency and operating costs,” says Richard Coates, sales director at MiX Telematics (Africa).

“Since then, our fleet management solution has enabled H&M Removals to reduce the risk of accidents, reduce fuel consumption by 12%, improve driver behaviour and achieve 100% compliant vehicle utilisation.”

The implemented solution comprises of the MiX Fleet Manager web-based platform and on-board computers that were installed in the company’s fleet of 35 trucks. This provides valuable telematics data and enables real-time vehicle tracking in order to maximise the safety of en route freight and reduce the day-to-day operational costs.

H&M Removals identified driver behaviour issues as the leading cause of inefficiencies within the company’s fleet and the highest risk to cargo and road safety.

“Without an advanced and effective fleet management solution in place, there was the risk of undesirable driver behaviour as well as drivers using vehicles for personal business, which cost the company unnecessary expenses. Ensuring compliance with the company’s safety standards is a high priority,” says Angela Julies, fleet controller at H&M Removals.

Because of this, the company needed a solution that could track driving events such as speeding and excessive idling while at the same time monitor fuel consumption, provide driver scoring and maintenance management, as well as comprehensive reporting.

The MiX Telematics solution has also enabled H&M Removals to design and implement a comprehensive driver performance management system. This, with corrective driver training, has improved the average driver ratings from 85% to 96%.

Since the solution combines driver scoring, detailed event logging and after-hour vehicle tracking into a single, automated report, the company has also been able to exercise greater fleet management control without requiring additional fleet controllers or other resources.

H&M Removals also relies on the system to help manage driver licences, Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs) and the vehicles’ Certificates of Fitness (COFs).

“The MiX Telematics Fleet Manager solution has, since 2013, achieved maximum uptime and produces highly accurate reports in terms of logging and live tracking. We’ve experienced outstanding performance, with no challenges detected during the rollout of the system,” says Julies.

It’s the way to go and this success story once again proves it. We rest our case.
