Eqstra Fleet Management says the biggest mistake made by many corporates has been to treat Africa as one single entity and to adopt a single strategy and approach to each African country targeted. As this picture shows, things are done differently in some African countries compared to how they are done in South Africa.

Eqstra Fleet Management has established Eqstra Fleet Consulting to assist African fleet operators with the design and implementation of cost reduction plans and cost containment strategies.

The new business unit, situated in Namibia, will concentrate on fleets operating outside South Africa and will be focusing on areas such as:

  • Vehicle selection versus operational conditions.
  • Fleet replacement and disposal strategies.
  • Funding strategies and best optimal solutions.
  • Utilization analysis and optimization.
  • Performance against competitors (industry related benchmarking CPK).
  • Operational best practices and implementation.
  • Information technology and systems including requirement definition.
  • Reporting
  • Employee Travel Management advice.

“With the African continent now being viewed as an area of growth, it has become essential for corporates who are planning to expand operations into Africa to understand the local context and to adapt their business model to suit the demand and demographics of each country,” says managing director of Eqstra Fleet Management, Murray Price.

“The biggest mistake made by many corporates has been to treat Africa as one single entity and to adopt a single strategy and approach to each African country targeted. However, any expansion requires not just the right resource but also the right infrastructure and assets.”

Reducing and containing costs, greening the fleet and providing appropriate incentives to employees have all become major considerations for the fleet operator.

“Our new business unit will provide companies with sufficient information to assess their travel, logistic and tax requirements from a fleet perspective,” he adds. “We are currently compiling information to set industry benchmarks and blueprints for fleet utilisation that is not in place in Africa and which we believe will become a barometer to compare fleet cost and utilisation within various industries. We would like to invite fleet operators to take part in this study,” says Price.
