Heneways Freight Services has become the latest member of the Chemical & Allied Industries’ Association (CAIA) to sign the Responsible Care (RC) Public Commitment, thereby committing the company to implementing its guiding principles.
Heneways Freight Services (Pty) Ltd, operating from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, was established in 1975 as freight forwarders and customs clearing agents. Today, customers still need traditional import and export services but also require and demand suppliers who add value throughout the supply chain – including those with warehousing and distribution management skills.
Heneways is involved in every aspect of freight management including forwarding and clearing, warehousing and distribution. The company provides a comprehensive door-to-door service for consignments of any size by sea, air, rail or road to and from anywhere in the world and throughout South Africa.
“As part of our commitment to Responsible Care, we want to ensure we transport and handle chemical products safely, with care for the environment and in full accordance with the relevant legislation and Responsible Care Management Practice Standards. The South African Safety and Quality Assessment System (SA SQAS) audit is also an internal and external driver of continuous improvement for our company”, says CEO Mark Buchel.
“The South African SQAS audit ensures that transport service providers are assessed according to an internationally accepted audit protocol modified to suit local conditions,” says Louise Lindeque, Responsible Care Manager at CAIA. “Chemical companies need assurance that these operations are carried out in a safe and quality manner with due regard for the protection of employees, the public and the environment.”
The Responsible Care initiative is practiced in 57 countries. In South Africa, there are 157 CAIA members – including chemical manufacturers, traders, transporters of dangerous goods, spill response and waste management companies that implement the initiative. Responsible Care is designed to have a measurable impact on safety, health and environmental performance.
