Range of new generation commercial vehicles launched by Tata Motors

Tata Motors recently showcased its new range of commercial vehicles at the Johannesburg International Motor Show 2013. The company unveiled the Tata Prima KL3TXF 6X4 Truck tractor and Tata Ultra 812 truck in South Africa.

The Tata Prima range has been jointly developed by Tata Motors and its two subsidiaries, Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company in South Korea and the Tata Motors European Technical Centre in the UK. The company has harnessed the best of inputs and technologies ‘” in styling, engines, transmission, suspension, chassis frames, fabrication and dies.

Inputs and resources have been gleaned from countries across all continents in order to cater to the varied requirements globally. 

  • The Prima truck cab has been styled in Italy by one of its best design houses.
  • Engine technology has come from USA and Europe.
  • Gearbox expertise – from both USA and Germany.
  • Knowhow for the chassis frame has come from Mexico.
  • The tried and tested suspension has its origins in the USA.
  • The sheet metal dies have been sourced from the best in Japan and Korea and
  • The cab has been fabricated with Swedish precision on a robotic weld line

Tata Motors’ Prima truck range has been conferred with a prestigious South Korean award , the Grand Prize of 2009 Good Design selection. The range has been designed according to the needs of a South African customer after multiple interviews, customer clinics and testing cycles in South African conditions. Their design and manufacture conform to safety regulations and emission standards that differ from state to state, country to country, thus, appealing to customers across continents. The new range is Euro III, Euro IV compliant, and Euro V ready.

Supported by a decade long presence of Tata Motors in South Africa in bakkies, passenger cars, medium, heavy & extra heavy commercial vehicles; Tata Motors  through its distributors have  already equipped its service network in South Africa to support the Tata Prima range.

With this range, the company will address the existing customers who want to move to the next level of goods transportation and earth movement, as well as large fleet owners who are mostly looking for a long lasting product at an attractive lifecycle cost. Tata Prima will not be a product that is selectively targeted at the market but will address the whole market holistically. Tractors will address both the short and long haul application needs catering to various segments like inter & intra city container transport, wholesale goods, mining, car carriers, perishable goods etc. Similarly for tippers, the mining and construction segments will cater for on road and off road segments. The Prima tipper range will be sold as fully built units.

The three models displays at the Johannesburg Motor show are

– Prima 4938S 6X4 tractor

– Prima 2528K 6X4 10cum box-tipper

The KL3TXF has been unveiled for future launch however the Prima 4938S and Prima 2528K will be available for sale in South Africa immediately.
