The IRTE has a duty to promote and develop new membership with a view to continually improving expertise and experience in the field of road transport engineering. The institute’s aim is to encourage a continuous flow of new members, thus bringing state-of-the-art
Technology and new expertise into its ranks. To this end, the Jack Webster Memorial Bursary Fund has been established to further the training and development of deserving young people who wish to build a career in road transport engineering.

Jack Webster Memorial Bursary Fund
The IRTE, through the Jack Webster Fund, offers bursaries to young technically competent road transport persons to study Road Transport Management at the University of
Johannesburg. Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified young people and the Johannesburg Centre Committee will award a number of bursaries annually. The awarding of a Jack Webster Fund Bursary will be subject to the terms and conditions and at the discretion of the selection committee, which will be final. Applicants will be advised in writing of the decisions taken by the selection committee.
Selection criteria
- The ideal candidate must hold a Matric/Grade 12 or equivalent SAQA (NQF) level qualification.
- The candidate should be a qualified artisan, with the qualification recognised by the industry. RPL will also be taken into consideration.
- The candidates should have been employed in the road transport industry for more than five years.
- The candidate must support the application with current curriculum vitae with verifiable references.
- The candidate’s application should be endorsed by the employer.
- The candidate should motivate their need for assistance.
- The candidate must give a personal motivation indicating why they want to attend a tertiary institution and how this qualification would affect their career path.
- The candidate must indicate their family’s support of the commitment to be made in studying the course.
- The candidate should indicate their state of health and disclose any illness or disability that may prevent them from completing the course.
