To carry on driving is false economy and costly damage could occur - buckling or distorting of extended cylinder!!

These photographs were taken by Amiel Maritz of Jost while visiting customers in the Pretoria area. He sent them to us as a contender for our Moegoe of the Month. Here’s what he wrote:

“Something obviously went wrong with the hydraulics on this side tipping combination and the bin could not be returned to the up position. This did not faze the driver who merrily continued on his journey; presumably back to the depot to have the problem tended to while spilling the remnants of the load left in the bin all over the road at 80 km/h to splatter the windscreens of following vehicles.’

Our trailer expert, Wolfgang Lehmann, took a look at the photographs and concluded that driving the rig back to the depot for repair rather than getting the mechanics out to repair it on site is false economy as additional and costly damage could be incurred by the extended cylinder being buckled or distorted.

“The rig is probably also illegal in terms of the maximum width which could incur a costly fine,’ he said.

Although cargo is often offloaded from trailer bins on mine sites while driving without leaving any structural damage, it is not at all feasible to drive long distances on public roads such as is seen here.

Thanks for sending us the pics Amiel. For your trouble, you will be receiving a bottle of FleetWatch’s finest Château Collapso. Enjoy it.

If any readers see what they perceive to be a Moegoe on the road, take a pic and send it to us with your reason for why you think your Moegoe is a worthy winner of this esteemed award. Email it to fleetwatch@pixie.co.za
