The latest comments on the pending carbon tax on vehicles seem to confirm that it is on the cards for introduction when the 2012 budget is tabled by the Finance Minister early next year.

So far there are no reliable indications of the amount of tax likely to be imposed other than it will be sufficiently severe to grab the attention of vehicle owners and fleet managers to ensure action is taken to reduce the carbon foot print. A popular speculation for the introductory amount is R75 a ton of CO2. Assuming this to be correct, here is a short hypothetical example of how much we will pay when based on two popular transport operations;

Imagine the cost for a fleet of 100 vehicles in each category? The Treasury says carbon taxes will not be ring fenced. Being within the user pays concept, carbon taxes will be charged to consignors and consignees. More cost creep on food prices.
