As the year draws to a close transport costs continue to creep up. Diesel now at its highest cost per litre accounts for around 45% for long haul big rigs. The ongoing rise in tyre costs throughout the year as well as wages, parts price and labour rates have driven CPKs to nearly R15 and R13 for 30 pallet Reefers and 7-axle Interlinks respectively.
Small insulated secondary distribution vans fitted with a fridge unit now operate at R20.50 CPK before tolls and overhead costs. These vehicles are mainly involved in distribution and delivery of fresh and processed food products.
